Perlite safe for Hermit Crab Substrate?

    So we just got 2 new land hermit crabs while visiting in FL. We have provided them with new shells, one has fully adopted a new shell, and the other has tried a couple out but decided he wanted his old shell back. Currently we are keeping them in a rinsed perlite with no additives. Does anyone know if this is a safe substrate, or have any references as to why it wouldn’t be? I have only been able to find some information about using organic soil without perlite, but none of it mentions why perlite should be avoided and I would like to get more information on this so I can be sure I am providing my hermies with the best home possible. Thanks for the help!
